Help with pattern recognition

Hi, I am looking to index a cell, copy it to the following 3 rows, then move to the next cell, copy it to the next 3 rows, etc. (see right column in attachment for example) The standard pattern recognition in Excel does not do this. How can I accomplish this?

Thanks, how about if there are more than 3 rows and the numbers are random? I will be indexing a column on a different sheet in my "real" application.

The way I have usually created a sequence like that is:

1) Enter 1 in D1, D2, D3 (assuming the upper left of your picture is A1)
2) in D4 =D1+1
3) copy D4 down as far as needed.
