Excel workbook is forgetting links between workbooks in the formulas

Hi, I work at a firm which uses a lot of Excel and generally we will link various data across workbooks. This is done by inserting links across workbooks into the formulas, but recently we have run into an issue with some particular documents where the formulas/links in the documents 'forget' the link and it asks/demands that the file location is input via a File Explorer every time we want to refresh the document. Clearly this is a bug, whether it has something to do with our formulas, how we have our document/data structure designed, or something intrinsically wrong with Excel itself.

If anybody has any suggestions on what to do, I would really appreciate the help.

That usually happens when the file to which you are linking has been moved, (or it's name has been modified) whilst the linking file is not open in memory.

Hi Richard, thanks for the reply. This issue manifests itself whether or not the other file has been moved or renamed. The problem I'm experiencing is very immediate. I will link to another data file, save my work, and try and change data in the document it's linked to, and it wont work. And then I'll try and refresh the initial document and it will ask me again what workbook I am linking to. It's quite frustrating.
