Excel glacially slow to load workbooks

File size? External data sources? Links to other sheets?

the only other thing that occurs to me is... have you any non-standard add-ins installed that could be slowing things up?

Terry, when excel is slow like that, how many files do you have open?
What other apps/progs do you have open?
What are your machine specs?
Is this just 1 machine, or multiple machines?

Hmm ... I got a message telling me to wait 30 seconds and after doing so and hitting Send I found this duplicate post - which I've duly edited!

I'm reliably informed that your signature (once in place) will appear the first time you post in a thread; but will not appear again unless you close your browser and open a new session... when it'll appear once... etc.

When I joined, I couldn't use a signature (regardless of length) until I had posted a few times and had some reputation - I don't know if that's still the case.
Edit - disregard, I see that your sig is now there, so that limitation's obviously gone.

Try going to the Control Panel, Programs and Features, select Office, click on Uninstall/Change. Choose REPAIR when presented with the dialogue with the choices of action.

Pleased to report I've found the cause. Following up a suggestion from the guys in the alt.comp.os,windows-10 newsgroup, I investigated add-ins. Turns out there are three types and this was a 'COM Add-in'.

I have no idea why it got installed in Excel. Maybe a default option I missed when I
re-installed my Space Navigator to use with Google Earth. (Don't see what use it would be in Excel?)

But with that now unchecked, my worksheets open in a flash.

Yes indeed Glenn, and my apologies for not recalling that you were the first to suggest that! To be honest, it's been so long since I looked at 'Add-ins' that at the time of your post I could only think of the Classic Menu. (Which it now appears is not an add-in anyway, in any of those categories.)

For what it's worth, this is what the website (http://www.3dconnexion.eu/products/3dxware-10) says:
'3DxWare 10 lets you pan, zoom and scroll in Microsoft Word, Excel and Internet Explorer, as well as scroll in Firefox and Chrome.'
But considering your experience, I think I'll give it a miss...
