Writing 1.60. and other numbers turn in something else

In Excel (both v.2003 and v.2010, Italian, but with international settings about decimals), I have the following behaviour.

    PROBLEM:
When I copy from Word to Excel some numbers that are answers to a multiple-choice test , the numbers turn in something else: not all only some of them.
    EXAMPLE:
For instance (to put it simple): 1.60. (notice the last period that closes the answer, and that it is necessary in my test) turns in Excel as 0.083333333. It seems that Excel interprets the numers as something related with hh.mm. It does so even if I digit that number directly to Excel.
    RESTRICTION:
I cannot paste as text only, since the answers have some upperscript and underscript text, that will be lost.
    QUESTION:
Is there a way to disable the feature of Excel that turns sometimes a number with a last "." in something else? Thank you.

With Excel formatting set as general, if I paste 1.60. from word to Excel- there is no problem. It pastes as 1.60. .... so.. how are your cells formatted prior to pasting? Can you post a sample of what you are copying from Word (in a word document)?

    Thanks Glenn,
in attachment a simple example of the described behaviour. Excel and Word are Italian. But as I said the international number settings are typical English ("." as decimals; "," as thousands).

It has to be something in your regional settings, clearly. When I copy paste from YOUR .doc to YOUR .xls, it's fine... Very odd.

Thank you for the feedback. Very helpful.
I found the culprit in fact.
    SOLUTION:
In the control panel, international settings, there is a tab for time formatting. In may case (as for all Italian Win flavours) it was set to H.mm.ss. I changed it in HH:mm:ss.
Now "1.60." is left correcly as a text input in the Excel cell.
