finding a point on a grid...

My brain isn't working right now. I am looking to find the distance between two cities that I've placed on a grid...as an example, b1 and a2=Toronto, c1 and a3 = New York, d1 and a4 = San Fransico etc... on my work sheet I have drop down lists in two columns for start location and end location. If I start in New York and end in Toronoto I'd like to find the number associated on the grid.

Am I making this more complicated than it should be?

    Thanks
    Derek

    Hi,

    An

formula should do it. Upload the workbook if you can't puzzle it out.

Thank you for your response. I've tried the formula and it's not returning anything. I've tried it a couple different ways but with no luck.

Cell K394 of the trips tab is where I have the formula. By Choosing G and I, the number 10 should have been the result from the Shee2 tab.

    Hi,

Did you mean L393 not K394.
You won't return anything anyway since the spelling of Saint_John is not consistent. You have
    Saint_John on the Trips Sheet
Saint John To: on Sheet2 column A
Saint John, NB on Sheet2 Row 1

For any matching system like this the first requirement if that names are spelled the same. Neither do you need all the columns Q:AX on the Trips sheet.

As I said you need two MATCH functions to find the relevant row and column and then wrap them in an INDEX function

So for instance if you change the column A and Row 1 on the grid and the drop downs in the Trips Sheet so that all towns & cities are consistent then
    L258 would be
    Formula: copy to clipboard

which returns the 91 which is found at cell DG167 in the grid.
