    Data Validation

    Hello -

I have a much more complicated spreadsheet which can be approximated by the attached doc. I want to give the option in G5 to only select Org1 or Org 2 (done). I want to excel then to only allow H5 to be either Option 1 or 3 if G5 is Org1 or Option 2 or 4 if its Org2.

Basically I have 50 organizations and they each can be one of 5ish options. If I leave everythign in together, it becomes impossible to select the right one out of the 250.

    Thanks,

    Vitaly

    Re: Data Validation

How does this look? I assembeld the correct values into the yellow cells, using this array formula:
    =IFERROR(INDEX(B:B,SMALL(IF($A$2:$A$5=$G$5,ROW($A$2:$A$5)),ROWS(D$2:D2))),"")

and then used this ordinary formula:
    OFFSET(Sheet1!$D$2,,,SUMPRODUCT(--(LEN(Sheet1!$D$2:$D$13)>0)))

    to select the correct cells.

Array Formulae are a little different from ordinary formulae in that they MUST be confirmed in the FIRST CELL ONLY by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to activate the array, not just ENTER. After that, the array can be dragged down as normal, to cover the desired range.

You will know the array is active when you see curly brackets { } - or "curly braces" for those of you in the USA, or "flower brackets" for those of you in India - appear around the outside of your formula. If you do not use CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER you will (almost always) get an error message or an incorrect answer. Press F2 on that cell and try again.

Don't type the curly brackets yourself - it won't work...

    Re: Data Validation

Sorry about that. I must not have hit submit on the reply.

Fantastic idea to create a seperate column and use that as the list. I transfered the approach to the much larger, complicated file and it worked.

    Thank you,

... You're welcome!! It might get messy if you require more than one row of DVs... but if there's only one (or a few)
