School project advice for improvement large excel data file.

    Dear excel users,

A classmate and I are working project for are study analytical chemistry.
This project partly regards improving an excelfile which is used for data processing of an analytical technique (ICP-MS).
This is used for the analyisis of nanoparticles.
However the excelfile does does become quite heavy/large.
We have tried to improve the excel adapting several formula's and using macro's.
For example to store information as kind of "static information" instead of copying the calculation sheet multiple times,
in the hope make the file less heavy.

I wonder if you guys have any comments for improvement.

The excel file you can find on my onedrive link posted below. (I couldnt post the link because i am a new user of the forum hope to be able to post it in a message below)
-The non adapted version is called "old version"
-And the new version is a zip file called "final version" containing a xlsm and xlsx file

We do love to hear if you do have any advice.

    Kind regards,
    Bram

I was hoping I could post the link but unfortunatly not, not even as a .zip file which should be accepted up to 9.7 mb.

Please upload a workbook or a representative cut down copy, anonymised if necessary. It is always easier to advise if we can see your request in its context.

Show a before and after situation with manually calculated results, explaining which information is data and which is results, and if it's not blindingly obvious how you have arrived at your results some explanatory notes as well.

The paperclip attach icon isn't working - no don't ask! You can attach files by using the 'Manage Attachments' option that you'll see when you select 'Go Advanced' and look underneath the post. If your file is very large just upload a subset. We don't need to see every row.

Cool Re: School project advice for improvement large excel data file.

if xlsx / xlsm max 1 MB (forum limit)
if bigger you can try save files as xlsb - max 9.77 MB (forum limit)
if much much bigger then try thinking about the database (Access, SQL etc...) or atomize data to different Excel files

Sory for my response before I was in a rush to get to the bus but still wanted to rapidly post it.

I tried to remove all non interesting sheets and data and saved them as .xlsb.
So hopefully they will work fine.

    Kind regards,
    Bram

    Hello Sandy,

    Thanks for your reply!
I did not know that Indirect() is a volatile function.

Do you have an alternative for this function?
    I use:

Indirect(concatenate("column","rownumber) a lot to refer to a range till the last filled row in the column?

    Kind regards,
    Bram van de Kooi

    Thanks for your reply Sandy,

The alternatives in the links did not seem to work for me so I will try to find something on google.

    Still thanks a lot,
    Bram
