Resource issue with Pivot Table Excel 2010

Working on a project to automate much of the current estimating process for new homes. This project will require me to handle large files, some in excess of 57000 rows, the smallest in the vicinity of 10000 rows. When I parse the data down to 10000 rows I am within the limits of pivot tables. I am able to create the pivot table but as soon as I try to set up row and column labels the entire PC freezes. Eventually I get a popup error stating "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other applications." If I click OK I get a second popup window stating "Not enough system resources to display completely." I have done a cold boot of the PC, started nothing but Excel and my results are the same. Nothing is set to start at startup. The PC has 8gb of memory. Is it likely this is truly a resource issue or is the message indicative of a different problem?
