Can anyone tell me what these black strings (lines) are please? They appear in several places throughout a spreadsheet I've received. I'd like to remove them. Thanks in advance

Can you click/select them as objects? If so, you can delete them. If there are many, you can press F5, click Special, select Objects, click OK. That will select all objects in the worksheet, at which point you can press Delete.
Note: This will delete ALL objects in the worksheet.
Answered my own question. These are turned on/off with the 'Show Ink' button on the 'Review' tab.
FYI:
"Ink annotations are a functionality that is only available on tablet PCs, with a specific version of Windows for Tablets. It enables the user to write notes with a stylus (stylist, ey, shg!) straight onto the screen, where the system will grab it and save it with the file as a kind of hand-written note.
On a regular desktop or laptop, the feature is meaningless, unless you receive a file that has been ink annotated on a Tablet PC."
