File Link Issue

Has anyone ever had this issue...

I have a file (file1) that has links to a 2nd file (file2). I saved a copy of File1 and named it file3. No data was changed in file3 and it still has a link to file2.

I closed file1, file2 & file3

I opened file2, amended it's values, saved it and closed it. I then Opened file1 and selected update links. File1 updated with the newly amended values from file2 - As expected.

With file1 still open, and file2 still closed I opened file3 and selected Do not update. File3 displayed the original values from file2 - As expected.

I then switched windows to view file1. It is now displaying the same values as file3 (the orginal file2 values) - Not as expected. There is no file link between file1 & file3 and file2 is not open.

Hopefully I've explained it clearly, what is happening here?

N.B. I am using Excel 2010

If I understood your problem, try this.

In the "Data" menu, select "Edit links" and delete the link or links you do not want.

There is no link between file1 and file3, and yet file1 updates when file3 is opened. It’s not logical and makes no sense, but it’s happening.
