Conditional formatting for excel is always disappearing (compatibility mode)

    Hello,

My issue is that I have a lot of Sheets that needs multiple conditional formatting.

For example If I select a choice from a dropdown on sheet 1, A specific box in sheet 2 will hightlight, then on sheet 3

and then on sheet 4, However whenever I tried to save then load the excel file sometimes my work with the conditional formatting just

disappear, like it was never there. I am using a compatibility mode (.xls) as some might have old versions of excel.

    1. Is this an issue with the file format?

    2. Is there a way where I can just lock the cells whenever I select a choice in the dropdown? as a beginner, does this include the macro or vbs?

    3. What are the alternatives for this. I want the cells to be highlighted or locked or uneditable or disabled based on the choice on a dropdown or is this a complicated problem?

    Thanks again.

Can you attach a sample workbook showing the issue?

Go Advanced -> Manage Attachments -> Upload

For example If I select Grade 1 on the first sheet all sheets will highlight the basic.

Then Grade 2 will highlight the intermediate and so forth.

    Thanks.

It's the same due to the compatibility issue.

There is no CF in that file.

Re: Conditional formatting for excel is always disappearing (compatibility mode)

I have uploaded another version. Here I have completed the first "Employee". Lets say he selected salary grade A on the drop-down box.

I have highlighted the Intermediate, Advanced and superior column as it is not applicable for him on the "Division 1" as it is not applicable for him.

This will be true to other succeeding divisions. Problem is there are at least 30 divisions, and with each different "Areas", some might have only 1 areas. It will be very time consuming to apply the CF

in each boxes and sometimes when I open my saved file all my hard work is gone. The CF's just vanished.

Is there any way to highlight the boxes, or locked them, any alternatives or suggestions?

    Thank you.

Re: Conditional formatting for excel is always disappearing (compatibility mode)

The problem is that you save the files with compatibily mode as .xls that fileformat will not support the conditional formatting of Excel 2007 and onwards with the introduction of .xlsx files also the conditional formatting was changed completely.

Be aware, while you have the .xls file open your current Excel version will allow you to set CF but as soon as you try to save (again) as .xls it will be removed.
You are allowed to create because you are in a version that works. compatability only means that you can save the file in a format that users with the older versions can open and use them
Non-existing functionallity cannot be supported by the older version.

    Thanks,

What if I created it on .xls from scratch instead of xlsx?
