Calculating how many years £x will last

    Hi

I'm hoping someone can give me a formula to calculate how many years a pot of £x will last if it grows by y% a year (interest) and depletes by £z a year. Obviously less interest will be earned in later years as the pot shrinks.

    Thanks in anticipation...

Re: Calculating how many years £x will last

How much of this question is a financial question (how would this be calculated in any programming language or even with a hand calculator) and how much is an excel specific question (I know how to calculate it by hand or other means, but don't know how to translate that into Excel)? We are usually good at Excel specific questions, once we understand the concepts behind the problem.

This case sounds to me like a present value/future value kind of problem, so I'd probably start by reviewing principles of these kind of problems. Once I had refreshed my memory on the principles behind present value/future value problems, based on the information given, I would guess that you want one of Excel's PV() family of functions -- maybe the NPER() function. https://corporatefinanceinstitute.co...nper-function/ Maybe NPER(y,z,x,0).
