Excel 2016 sheet formatting

Using Excel 2016 I have a workbook with 4 sheets with rows numbered from 1 to 1XX showing in the row headings column

Sheets 1 and 4 scroll smoothly with the top two rows frozen; sheets 2 and 3 scroll smoothly with the top two rows frozen but when the row count gets above 99 the page moves slightly right and the row headings column to the left of AXXX etc widens - why is this?.

I would not mind if all sheets did this but why just the two sheets out of 4?

I cannot replicate this with just going from 99 to 100 rows, but I CAN replicate it when going from 999 to 1000 rows.

Whats happening is the number "column" is changing from 3 to 4 digits, and is widening to accommodate that change.

You've jogged my memory. I have hidden all the rows after the last one on all sheets so when the last row comes up on the screen all the other rows, which I can't see - but Excel can, and so adjusts the number "column" to suit. Isn't it simple when you know?

It's not obvious on all the sheets of the workbook because some of them do not scroll far enough. It's not the 3 figure digits which cause the right adjustment but the four digits and over.
