Moving Excel files without breaking links to other workbooks

    Dear all,

I have an Excel workbook (1) that contains links to two other Excel workbooks (2 and 3).

The Excel workbook (1) is a template that is copied then pasted into other folders when needed.

For some reason, the links to the Workbook (2) remain in place after the (1) is cut and pasted into the new folder. However, the link to Workbook (3) breaks and tries to link to a non-existent workbook in the new folder.

    Example:

    (Correct link)

    c:/Rota/Master/[Workbook3.xlsx]

    (New, incorrect link)

    c:/Rota/New Folder/[Workbook3.xlsx]

I want the link to remain the same after cutting and pasting, instead of changing to the new folder, where it then cannot find the workbook.

For some reason it works on one of the links but not on the other, but for the life of me I cannot workout why one link changes and the other does not.

If anyone has any idea of how to fix this, I would really appreciate it.

Re: Moving Excel files without breaking links to other workbooks

Whenever I am playing around with/moving files that are linked to other files, I always make sure all files are open. Then, I dont MOVE the file, I SAVE-AS to the new location. I then save all files again. Doing it this way maintains all links.

Perhaps the 1 linked file that is working, is doing so because the source/destination was also already open?
