Cell with Number - Left align & overflow to adjacent cells

    Is this possible at all?
To left align a cell with a number. and have it overflow to the next cell/s.

I know that numbers can be formatted to Text but there are issues if you have a formula in the cell, and so on.

Reason is that I'm trying to avoid merging cells.

Home/Alignment and click the left alignment icon.

    Thanks for responding.
This doesn't make the number overflow to the adjacent cell though.
It does if it's Text though.
I need it as a number.

Why can't you simply change the column width?

I need the column width to remain fixed as it is used like a grid pad for calculations.

Puzzled. The column width will autoadjust. You can fix the column width and if it's set too narrow, it'll show as ###. I don't see why you would even dream of merging cells.

It's because there is working all over the place.
Once I widen the column width, parts overflow past the page.

I'm puzzled, too. Seems that aesthetics (form) is coming before function, which is like putting the cart before the horse.

Then adjust the print page settings to keep it on one page.

OK thanks for advising and assisting again.
It appears that the long used grid format hasn't been a good idea. It has been used for centuries.

Grid format is fine - nothing wrong with that. Just let the columns be as wide as they need to be.

Let's say your formula is this...

    =A3/B3

simply change the formula to this...

    =TEXT(A3/B3,"General")

You should be able to do something similar with whatever your actual formula is.

Re: Cell with Number - Left align & overflow to adjacent cells

    Thanks for looking into.
Yes I did consider that but will have to use the values in future calculations.
So that means a lot of work to convert number to strings and vice versa all the time.
I don't think the Text format could be used as a reference in the next formula, I could be wrong though.

Can you show us what you are trying to achieve/avoid on a more realistic sheet??

You will still be able to use the outputted text number in mathematical operations as Excel will automatically convert the text number to a real number in order to use it in a mathematical operation.

    Yes you are right.
It wasn't working for me as I had formatted the cell using the right-click menu and chosen "Text". But with your formula method it appears too work.
    Thanks for that.

    See attachment.
At the moment I am merging cells.
I used the Sum function on merged cells recently and got 3 times the value expected.
So I'm trying to stop merging cells.

Can't do much with a non-editable picture of a spreadsheet. Attach the Excel file.
