# Automatically Taking Values of a Point on a Graph's Curve - PLEASE HELP

1. ## Automatically Taking Values of a Point on a Graph's Curve - PLEASE HELP

Hi there,

I need to take many values from a graph's line. My current method is hovering over the point on the line and writing the co-ordinates. This is taking far too long.

Does anyone know of a quicker method to extract values of a point on a line? Ideally I could click the point and it automatically log the data.

All help would be appreciated! Any questions or if I haven't been clear, just ask

Thanks!

Can you, please, attach a sample file with an example? It's hard to figure out the problem on an image

Hi Diana, thanks for the fast response. I can't unfortunately as it's for work . I'll try explain my problem better:

My task is to simplify the complex line graph (black line) to something more simple (orange line). The values you see below the graph are ones I've pulled from the graph by hovering over a point and physically typing in the values.

Is there a quicker way? It's taking me ages!

You can if you desensitise it. We never expect to see real data - prepare a small sample workbook.

That makes sense, I've made some new data, I hope this helps. Thanks for helping me

Welcome to the forum.

Unfortunately, it has come to our attention you have violated Rule #8 of our Forum RULES:

You will need to wait patiently until your helper is online again. I am not that person - I was merely telling you how to provide a sample workbook.

I'm confident something can be programmed into the spreadsheet to automate this, but we need a meaningful algorithm that replicates your manual process.

At first, I thought you were describing a sampling procedure where you extract every tenth, fiftieth, or nth data point. That doesn't match your results, but I cannot see what logic leads to your results. However, I expect that whatever process you want it's going to involve a lookup step, so maybe start there.

1) a MATCH() function to find which row contains the time. MATCH(G4,\$D\$2:\$D\$5000,1)
2) INDEX() to return the corresponding value from C. INDEX(\$C\$2:\$C\$5000,MATCH(...)).

Your expected results suggest that there is more you want to do, but let's start with the lookup step until you can explain better what you need to do.
