Hello!
The Design Tab does not show in the Developer tab (see screenshot how my Ribbon looks like). I cannot find a solution on the web so far. Anybody has an idea how to add the Design Tab?

What version of Excel are you using? Not the release number but the version (Office 365? Office 2021? Office online?) For PC or Mac?
This looks nothing like any version of Excel I've ever used. I do not see the panel labels here (Code, Add-Ins, Controls) under the panels. In the rightmost panel, you have a list of control icons instead of the usual options. Here is what mine looks like (the Dev Tools panel with an X through it is a custom panel so nobody else would have that).

Upon searching it appears that you are using a beta version of Office Insider for the Mac. Beta versions can give you all kinds of surprises.
I dont think I have a Beta version. It says Microsoft 365 for Mac (see screenshot).

There is a bug in our image attachment feature. To attach an image, first click Go Advanced under your edit box. Then go ahead to press the image icon and attach your image.
16.56 does appear to be a preview, not beta.
Nonetheless you are looking at an Insider Preview and not the Current release. I have enhanced your title to give more detail, which may attract more people familiar with this specific release.
Thanks Jazzer. I am confused why I have a preview in the first place. I selected the free trail on the microsoft website, then downloaded the only office version that is available. Help -> Contact Support does not work in my excel desktop app (I posted a separate thread already today). Therefore I post it here. Maybe someone can help.
Thank you
Sarah
I guess you are referring to the Design Mode button, which does not exist in Mac Excel.
If that's not what you mean, please clarify, as there aren't any items missing from your screenshot.
Rory
on macos, the "Design" group is related to "Pivot Chart Tools", and so is not part the of "Developer" tab.
you can check this in excel for macos by going to Excel> Preferences> Ribbon & Toolbar
then under "Customise the ribbon" selecting All tabs
then scroll down to "Pivot Chart Tools"

I think the design feature under pivot chart is different. I am looking for the "Design Mode" under the developer tab. I contacted MS support, who told me that the "Design Mode" icon only exists in the Windows version of Excel, but not in the Mac version. Also, the Mac version has not ActiveX form controls. Hard to believe for me but that is what support told me. Anybody here who used Microsoft 365 Excel 16.57 and who does have the "design mode" icon and actionX forms under the developer tab?
Thx Sarah
Thats what support told me, too. Thanks Rory. Do you have ActiveX controls in your Excel for Mac version?
No. You cannot use activex controls on worksheets on a Mac.
Thanks Jazzer. I have a 365 subscription with only one option of downloading the Excel desktop version, which I did download. If it is true what you write that it is a preview, why does MS let me only download a preview with limited features. I purchased a subscription, and logically want to use the full version of MS Excel. Who wouldn't. Do you have an idea how to change it to the fully functioning version of Excel?
Even with full version… the features that require activex will not be available in mac.. because mac does not use it. Simple as that!
