Hello,
on performing the following steps in Excel 2010:
- select A1 and A2
- click the arrow next to Fill Color Button image or right click
- under Theme Colors or Standard Colors, click red
the color of A1 and A2 is changed to red, but the color of the border line between A1 and A2 is also changed to red.
How can the colors of the 2 cells be changed retaining the gray color of the border line?

I feel as if you are talking about the grid lines rather than borders.
If you select cells A1:A2 and then select More Borders (Home tab > Font pane) you can select a border to be placed between A1:A2 and the border color.
If you then change the fill color to red, the borders will remain the color that you previously chose.
