IMO, the key difference between the two is that LOOKUP() can only perform a binary, approximate match lookup. It does not have an exact match option. VLOOKUP() can perform both a linear, exact match lookup (slow and resource intensive, but often more in line with what users are expecting) and a binary, approximate match lookup (faster and requires the lookup table to be sorted in ascending order by the left most column).
Unfortunately, almost all examples on the internet for VLOOKUP() describe the exact match behavior. Here is one tutorial that explains both the exact match and approximate match behavior, so you can see how that toggle option works: https://www.ablebits.com/office-addi...okup-tutorial/

Also please update your profile to give your version of Excel. "Excel" is not a version. The reason we ask this is that different versions have different features and we don't want to offer you an answer that won't work in your version.MS-Off Ver: Excel
