2010 excel file not working in Office

    2010 excel file not working in Office

    I have a file I would like to get working again. It does work in Excell 2010 software. I have tried converting it to
    work in Office but have not had any success. I have also tried safe mode. The issue seems to be the fields are not clickable which in turn does
    not allow me to change anything in the file. I have a version of 2010 on an old PC and the file runs just fine. Everything I have
    found and tried so far has not allowed me to use the file in Office Excel. The file also seems to work in Google sheets but
    I really do not like that as an option.

    I have looked through the Forum and have not found the silver bullet for this issue. So If anyone knows of one please point me
    in the right direction.

    If this old workbook contains macros, then it will need to be saved with the new .xlsm suffix. Is this something that you have already tried?

    Yes I have tried saving the file in Excel 2019. Even after the file is save the cells are still
    not activated.

    What doesn't work? I have opened it and saved it as .xlsx format. It seems to use shapes (lines specifically) around cells rather than using borders. I'm not sure why that is but they get in the way of accessing the cells themselves. You can select a cell next to the cell you want and arrow left (or right) to get at the cell and edit it if you wish.

    You can select each of the shapes/lines and delete them. And you could replace them with borders. Tedious job but doable.

    Looks like the file hasn't been used for 20 years.

    I uploaded the original file that has never been altered in years. I hope that it can be saved. There are many cells that can be edited in 2010 excel. For best
    info if you look at step 11 the yellowish cells should all be selectable and edit able. Any version after 2010 excel this file has not worked but now I need it again.

    OK. I can see the problem. When I open the workbook in Excel 2010, the behaviour is slightly different. If you click around the edge of the cell, you select the line (you'll see the name of the line in the Name Box (to the left of the Formula Box)). If you click bang in the middle of the cell, it selects the cell. You can see the difference in the mouse pointer. It changes to a cross-hair when the line is going to be selected and a big plus sign when the cell itself will be selected.

    With 365, and obviously 2019, it's not that easy. If you zoom to 110%, you can select the cells in the same way as on 2010. Not ideal but it seems to work for me.

    The only other way would be to delete the lines and replace them with borders. There are a LOT of lines.

    Wow Zooming in does allow me to edit the file. Good Find. I guess the next question is how do I get it to behave without the zooming in

    This might work.

    In a standard module

    Please Login or Register  to view this content.
    Then on the sheet, select all the shapes: Press Alt+F10 to open the selection pane, then Ctrl+A to select all the shapes.
    Right click on a shape (one of the many selected) and assign the macro above.
