Question Setting an Overall width/height limit

First, i apologize if this has been answered before, but its 4:30AM and i wanted to get thit out here before i crash. :-p

The easiest way to explain what I want is to try and imagine you have cell range of A1:J47 there are merged cells, different cell widths, heights, etc. and lets say the combined cell widths from A1 to J1 is 83.27 (not sure on the unit of measure). A1:J1 is merged. its a title. the top and sides of the cell is a double border, the outline of my spreadsheet. i want know if there is a way to Adjust B1 without it affecting the position of J1? if your still confused....example

    | | <-- is a cell

    Before...

    |......This is the title.......|
    |____|____|____|____|___|
    |____|____|____|____|___|

    After...

    |......This is the title.......|
    |____|______|__|____|___|
    |____|______|__|____|___|
    ........... ^^Changed

Understand? I adjusted B2's cell width, without affecting any other cell length besides C3 which had to be modfied. thus leaving my overall total
    width what it was.

My main reason for wanting this is becauser i utilize as much area on the print out as possible. and normally if i stretch out the width of a cell is pushes or pulls the cells, so then i have to go back and adjust every affected cell. I can drop the merged cells thing iif i need to and i bet i will need to.

Also.. if the same can be done for the total length from top to bottom... i wouldnt mind having that too.

I'm sure there is and probably fairly simply, but this is a question for the VB guys on the programming forum. I don't think it can be done in native Excel.

I guess the first thought is that you don't adjust the width of a cell, you adjust the width of a column.

The second thought is why would you merge Title cells when there is a useable option "Centre Across Range" which sets the title in the centre of the selected range without the hassle of merging cells.

If you want to retain an overall width on a selection of columns, then, for each increase in that range of columns you will need to organize an equal decrease.

You can select 'Fit to (Width/Length)' and have Excel organize the sizing for you if you wish.

Does this help in your thinking?

    aded:
If you were trying to say that you need a wide cell B2 and a narrow C2, together with a narrow cell B3 and a wide cell C3, then you would need to:

    Insert a column between B & C
    Merge B2 & C2 - leave D2
    Leave B3 - Merge C3 and D3

    adjust other rows to suit.
