    Links Must Be Open?

I have a spreadsheet which will get data from another spreadsheet. Normally, this works fine. It asks if you want to do the update. You click "Update" and you're done. But in this new linked spreadsheet I made, it says that both files need to open or it won't do the update. I don't want my users to open both. Is there someway around this problem? I've never seen it before. Thanks.

    check if this works

in cell A1 of spreadsheet 1 put =spreadsheet2!A1

if it does with spreadsheet 2 closed, it is due to complex formulae being applied. I have found that complex formulae with offsets containing match functions dont work with a closed spreadsheet. So I put the complex formulae in spreadsheet 2 and get at it with a direct cell reference.

    Still no luck

Thanks. No luck. I even started two new spreadsheets with just one cell linked to another and I get the error. But all my other spreadsheets do this trick without a problem. I wonder if there's something wrong with the format of the whole spreadsheet or something. I may try taking my other spreadsheets and do work and just replacing the data. This is crazy.
