How do I convert dates into numbers for the use of a graph

I want my graph to recognise Dates as numbers. For instance every column that has a date it would count as 1.

    e.g. 21.12.05
    31.12.05
    04.01.06

I want the sum to add them together to 3?

Thanks for your help. I hope I have explained myself clearly?

Are those Excel dates formatted to look like that, or text strings?

    If they're numbers, =COUNTA(A1:A10)

    If they're text, =COUNTA(A1:A10)
