formula to allocate points to positions in a race

I am new to spreadsheets, but have been given the job of creating one for my school's crosscountry championship next week. All I want to do is assign a point system to the position achieved in race for the different houses participating!

1st place = 25 points
2nd place = 24
down to 24th place = 2 points
25th place and lower= 2 points

I have spent over 2 hours trying to work out how to do it...

You can take a look at Vlookup or Lookup in Excel Help.,

These allow you to create a table on the side with one column showing the positions and the adjacent column show the corresponding point system.

For example:

=Vlookup(A1,X1:Y10,2,False) would lookup the item in A1 in the table located in X1:Y10 and pull corresponding points from column Y.

Why you have given equal points to the range 3 - 24 and 25 - ....
Anyway i have attached a sheet that might help you
