    lookup arrays - relative references?

I have never understood why references to a lookup table within the same workbook always default to relative cell references. References to lookup tables in a different workbook default to absolute cell references, which, in my experience is the ONLY useful way to make a lookup formula.

    Can anybody enlighten me?

    Thanks

I'm not an MS Developer, so this observational.

Making references to OTHER workbooks includes the chance the referenced data may be in a closed workbook. The default absolute references thus make sense as a reminder that the local sheet has no way of tracking changes made to the OTHER workbook unless both books are always open at the same time.

References to data in the LOCAL sheet is not a problem for Excel, and the relative references are a reminder that as you make changes locally, the local references will always update properly.
