How to cut and paste cells without having to adjust the formulas

Hello, I'm REALLY new at this, and I'm just learning as I go. Please excuse me if I don't use the correct terms. I will try to explain my problem as clearly as possible.

I need to make some changes on the layout of my worksheet, but cutting and pasting cells with formulas would mean having to adjust the cell references in the formula. Is there a way I can do this and the cell references would be automatically adjusted?

Thank you so much in advance.

    Hi Stephanie,

Welcome to the forum. With out seeing your workbook it's difficult to advise. What I think you are talking about is moving formulae but keeping the same point of reference, or vice versa. What you need to know about is absolute cell references.

When you create a formula that refers to another cell or range, the cell or range reference can be relative or absolute. A relative cell reference adjusts to its new location when the formula is copied and pasted. An absolute cell reference does not change, even when the formula is copied and pasted elsewhere.

This is an example - $A$1

If you were to move it as you describe the reference would stay the same whereas A1 when moved would adjust.

    Hope that helps.

Post your workbook if you are unsure.

    Dear Mr. Dawson,

You are right, as long as I didn't use the absolute cell reference, I could move around my cells without adjusting the formulas. Thank you! :-)
