Open Excel Files into separate windows

I want to open 2 excel files in separate windows to view them side by side. Each time I try, it opens them in the same window. I've found ways around this by browsing forums etc but the only fixes I've found are to edit your registry or open to separate excel programs and then open each file from the program.

I want to double click on 2 files and have them open in separate Excel so that I can move between multiple screens

This functionality is now available in xl2013.
prior versions require the workarounds you mention
