    copy and paste multiple selection

    Hello all,

I have a bit of a problem with copy and pasting multiple selections. I have attached an example workbook with what I want to do. Basically, I am going to have multiple people working on the same spreadsheet. Each person will input values manually (age and gender) for a given color, using the filter for the "favorite color" column, then once they finish with that color they will send the spreadsheet back to me and I want to copy and paste their work into a "master spreadsheet." However, when I tried to copy and paste their work to the original spreadsheet, I got the error "can not be used on multiple selections", even though the selection area and everything was exactly the same. In the example, I only created 50 cases, but in reality I am dealing with about 20,000 cases. Thanks in advance, and any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello

After doing your selection of the area you want to copy, hit the funtion key F5 which will bring up a pop-up for Go To: --> Click on Special --> Select Visible cells only --> Now copy the selection and paste special (Values) to the destination.

    hope that works for you

    Cheers

    Anand

Re: copy and paste multiple selection

    thanks for your reply

It's not quite working as I want it to. It is only pasting the value from the first row.

For instance, if I select it to filter "red" under fav color, and insert values "1" under each of the age columns and then want to copy that over to an identical sheet that does not yet have the "1" values in yet - following your instructions, after pasting, it only puts a "1" into the first row and leaves the other 3 rows blank. I suspect this has something to do with trying to copy and paste from filtered sheet to filtered sheet. If I try to paste into an empty area, it works fine - but this isn't quite what I want. I want to copy the "1" values for only the red color (case numbers 1, 11, 17, 26) over to an identical sheet. Sorry if it's a bit confusing...

Maybe this example spreadsheet is easier to see. I have 2 sheets at the bottom, identical except sheet1 has values for age and gender. It is currently being filtered to show only red under favorite color. I want to copy the age and gender results over to sheet2.

Re: copy and paste multiple selection

edit: it seems as though when I paste onto a filtered list, the values are showing up in the first row, and the rest of the values are being pasted into the hidden rows. Is there any way around this?

Did you try and open the clipboard to copy and then paste using the drop down arrow? That's the only way i got it to work.

Re: copy and paste multiple selection

just tried it - doesn't change anything. Even selecting visible cells only from original sheet, copy, select visible cells in identical sheet - when I paste, it pastes the first row but then the other rows remain empty (it's pasting the rest into the hidden rows). How did you get it to work? I must be missing something...

I'm not sure if Excel 2003 has this feature, but it's what i used to get it to work for me.

Re: copy and paste multiple selection

sorry haven't updated my version - i'm running excel 2010. Still can't get it to work, same problem. It's pasting cells into the hidden rows after the first row I'm guessing because of the filtered list display.

Re: copy and paste multiple selection

The only thing i can suggest is to sort the data first before making changes or filtering so all the data is in a row.

I just thought of this but maybe it will work for you. It may be fastest way to accomplish what you want. Take a look at the cells i copied. You will notice a simple "=" formula that you can just drag or drop down as far as you like.

I'm afraid that's the best i can do.....

Thanks, I appreciate your trying to help. It's still not quite what I need though. The equals formula can get the values I want copied, but the problem comes when I want to paste it into a a filtered list. Even through using the select visible cells ... it doesn't paste exactly how I want it. I want the values pasted into the filtered list showing only those with "red" under color. That is rows 2, 12, 18, and 27. When I try to paste into those 4 selected cells under age or gender, it will insert my 4 values under rows 2, 3, 4, and 5 (3 4 and 5 are hidden because of the filter). Surely it can't be this difficult can it??

Re: copy and paste multiple selection

    chopstxrice,

I did quite a bit of research on this issue yesterday and found an unfortunate truth. There is no easy way to do this. It is a issue many people have encountered and no solution that I have seen has been developed. A macro may be capable of doing this but I'm not 100% sure.

    Disappointing I know.....
