Unlock cells in worksheet whil protecting the name of the cell

    Hi there,

I have designed a tool in excel 2010, which is spread over over several worksheets. To make referencing between worksheets easier, I designated several cells in my 'input'-tab with a specific name (Via the name bar).

Currently I am trying to protect the cells, while enabeling users to insert their values in the input-tab. Is there a way to protect the names and layout of my cells?

    Thanks!

Just protecting them isnt really the problem.

My formulas depend on the names I have given to the cells. If I would leave these unprotected, it is possible for users to alter these names and thereby screw up the formulas. Can I protect the names of my cells but still allow users to alter the values?

Could you upload a copy of your workbook? Indicate the cells that you want others to have access to in order to enter data so that we can see exactly what is going on.

As a test I have unlocked several cells on a workbook, gave them names and then protected the worksheet and entries could be made in the cells but the names of the cells could not be changed. Therefore any formula relying on the name would remain functional.

    example protecting sheet.xlsxHey newdoverman,

Tried the same solution before. In most cases this will work, but when you cut and paste cells, the (named) cell still shifts position. As my sheet is organized in rows of related data, I would like to prevent this form happening (it screws up my VLOOKUP functions in a different part of my project). I just can't figure out how to fix this.
See the attached for a demonstration

Have those named cells call their values from "Input" cells and lock the named cells and protect the worksheet. The values entered in the input cells will show in the named cells but the user will not have direct access to the named cells.

That might be a workable solution, good thinking!
