    Searching for substring

Is there a way to search a spreadsheet of 7,000+ records and list only those rows containing a specific text substring such as the letters "xyz"? When I do a Ctrl + F and Find All I am presented with the Find and Replace screen, but I need just the actual records to be sorted or extracted for further analysis. Is this possible? Onle need 200-300 ofr the 7,000+ records.

    Re: Searching for substring

The "xyz" would be in one specific column, but I would need to be able to view the entire row.

    Re: Searching for substring

    martindwilson,

Thanks for the response but - pardon my inexperience - I've never used filtering. When I click Data > Filter I don't know the correct syntax. Can you help here?

    Re: Searching for substring

select the column/columns you want to filter
    then data/filter
click the arrow on the column you want to filter
hover over "number filters" and another dropdown appears
select custom filter from the list
    the custom autofilter window opens
in the top left box click the arrow and scroll down to end ,select "contains"
in the top right box put the text you want to find
    click ok

    Re: Searching for substring

I tried that, but, when I select the particular column and then go to Home > Data > filter, I am not presented with anything showing "number filters". Am using Version14 (2010).

    martindwilson,

Thank you for your help. That worked. Didn't even notice the drop down menu arrows on the tops of columns.
