Skip Manual Selection of Pathway to Reference Workbook

HELP!!

I've been trying for hours to figure this out. I am putting together a sheet that references cells a number of other spreadsheets. I didn't write a macro because 1) I'm not very good at it and 2) this sheet needs to be editable by anyone. In any case it concatenates the reference file pathway and file name from some other cells, and then I have to manually copy and paste them and put an equals sign in there to make the reference active. every time I do that an "update values" box appears and forces me to manually select the file and sheet, even though the string should contain all of that information. How can I make it automatically update and not have to click through a bunch of files to update every cell?
