Where do I create a range of data for a drop down list?

I am using Excel 2003. Does the data list for a drop down list have to be on the same worksheet or can it be on a separate worksheet?

I have been building a worksheet to calculate the various pieces of cabinets I am going to build, and each piece's length and width, qty needed. It is working pretty well.

New hurdle. I want to select a cabinet style from a drop down list and have a clip art picture display in a nearby cell. For example, if I select Base three drawer, a picture depicting the cabinet will be displayed.

I was hoping I could use a separate worksheet to store the data which will be a dozen or two different cabinet descriptions in one column and a picture in the adjacent cell of each one.

I can see where I might be making 15 of these sheets, one for each cabinet to be built so I was hoping having the basic data on one sheet would help keep the file smaller.

Do I need a later version of Excel to do this?

    Thanks.

It can be anywhere you want but, in Excel 2003, you will have to define a Named Range for the range that contains the list data. In later versions, you can refer to the range but it's good practice to name it and, often, you'll want to make it a Dynamic Named Range so you can add to it without having to adjust any references.

Got it! Thank you. I left out that danged "=" sign before the range name.

    Hello MT Stringer,

....I want to select a cabinet style from a drop down list and have a clip art picture display in a nearby cell. For example, if I select Base three drawer, a picture depicting the cabinet will be displayed.

I was hoping I could use a separate worksheet to store the data which will be a dozen or two different cabinet descriptions in one column and a picture in the adjacent cell of each one.
Maybe something along the lines of the attached sample Workbook?

    Regards.
