Can't put an equal sign into a cell

I need to simply put an equal sign ( = ) into a cell, NOT a formula. But Excel won't let me because it thinks the equal sign is the beginning of a formula. How can I put nothing but an equal sign into a cell? I need to do this because, along with the contents of a few other cells, I am concatenating them all into one cell which IS a formula. I have a specific reason why I need to do it this way. Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Can't put an equal sign into a cell

I have the equal successfully by itself now however, unfortuantely, I'm not getting the desired results when concatenating. I'm trying to build the formula cell by cell with each component in a separate cell like this (triple spaces indicate a new cell): = mid ( c 1 , 2 1) The reason I need to do this is because I will have many rolls of these cells and I need to inclement the numbers going down the columns by using the need little handle provided by Excel for this purpose. If I'm not making sense just ask me to explain further but I think it should be self-explanatory.

I should have added that the result is a correct formula but now I need for that formula to give the value of the formula.

Re: Can't put an equal sign into a cell

I'm afraid buiding a cell that way is not possible.
However if you have a formula like =MID(C1,2,1) and you pull it down, the C1 will increment to C2, C3, etc..

If you need to increment the other terms, and supposing you are starting in row1 you can use something like =MID(C1,1+row(),1+row()-1) and pull down

I'll give that a try but I'm off to an appointment now. When I come back in a couple hours I'll have another look at it and, if it's what I need, I certainly will "add reputation" and mark it "solved" To bad I can't do something more for you because you have been a BIG help.
