Newly opened xls file appeared as a workSHEET not workbook

I'm sure this is very basic! I opened a workbook called Walk Index.xlsm (which I've been using regularly for a few weeks) and it duly appeared as usual.

A little later I opened a separate file called DVD Index.xls, which I haven't used since replacing Excel 2000 with Excel 365 a couple of months ago. My intention was to bring it up to date and then save it in the xlsm format as recommended in an earlier post. But to my surprise it opened as a separate tab (a separate worksheet) in Walk Index.xlsm

I'd appreciate an explanation of this unexpected behaviour please.

Re: Newly opened xls file appeared as a workSHEET not workbook

    Hi Terry,
I do not have any experience with earlier Xl , having come in as a late starter with computers at the XL 2007 / 2010 time.

But check out “Weirdo 1” in this Thread
    http://www.excelforum.com/excel-prog...w-modules.html
I am wondering if for some strange reason your DVD Index.xls has been taken by your newer XL as a Macro sheet, or something similar****
    If you _.....
_a) cannot see a worksheet code module or any information about that worksheet in the VB Development project Window
    and
_b) when you right click on that worksheet you do not get the option to view code
_.... then it sounds like it is being taken as a ( Excel 4. ) Macro Sheet or similar

I do not know whether in XL 2000 you only have one sheet and is that Excel 4 ????? – I do not think XL 2000 is Excel 4 https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Excel )
But do you only have one sheet in XL 2000?

****I believe Macro Sheets in later XL versions are only there for backward compatibility. So that could answer your question. It is perhaps not possible to save a File from earlier versions as an .xlsm File. “Housing” them in a macro sheet in another .xlsm File is possibly therefore the only way to go “half way” to “bringing it up to date”.

    _........

Also if you right click on the tab of that worksheet and select the Insert, you will see Highlighted what it is.

    Alan

P.s. if you upload the File i can take a quick look and see if it looks the same as the mysterious Macro Sheet that I once had ( which as you see from the Thread I referenced came out to be just a ( Excel 4. ) Macro Sheet that I probably inserted by mistake )
