    Hi Mellissa,

The whole idea of learning something is BECAUSE you don't know how to do it.

Learning Excel is no different to learning anything else. Start basic and work your way to more complex things as you gain knowledge.

There are a million tutorials on the internet you could look at, there are books and videos and all manner of other material to get you learning.

When I was learning it, I found just giving it a go and researching for solutions when you find something you don't know how to do worked well for me.

This forum is a great resource for that. There are tonnes of questions that have already been asked and answered and plenty of people of all skill levels here to help if you cannot find what you're looking for, so don't be afraid to ask.

It's not as difficult as you think. Keep it simple!

    BSB

PS. You state your colleague is 'super awesome with Excel building hectic sheets with formulas'... HECTIC does not sound awesome to me. Sounds like poor planning!

    My take:

    1. Go to book store, pick a book that has practical examples that's applicable to your line of work. Commit to going through the entire book.
    2. If you have access to PowerPivot, learn it well. Do note that while it is packaged with Excel, it uses completely different set of principles. Best to get a proper book on the subject (I'd recommend Marco Russo's books; Analyzing Data with Microsoft Power BI & Power Pivot for Excel, The Definitive Guide to DAX, etc). Don't think of it as extension of Excel, but as separate software.
    3. Learn good data structure principles. Properly designed data structure is key to maintaining your model. Don't fall into very common trap, by setting up data sheet using cross tab, multi-header table.
    4. Search and download sample workbooks. Deconstruct them and understand how it is built.
    5. When stuck on specific problem, post on forum and ask others for help.

I agree with all the above. But firstly, and perhaps you already know this, you need to grasp relative and absolute references ($), you would be amazed the people I come across who can use quite complicated formulas who don't!

Also uses of excel can be quite specific, accountancy rarely features for me, so a host of financial functions are unknown, but to manipulate data I am a lot more conversant. Try and look for resources specific to what you are doing. I used to get frustrated that excel courses didn't cover the work i did!

Depends on how you like to learn - but I think it is good to play around trying to do things and come on here and ask lots of questions about the work you have (desensitized so you don't give away company secrets of course)

In my opinion it is much easier to learn with your own examples that have meaning to you and someone will always be here to help you as long as you are willing to also try to help yourself.

Remember in excel, if you can logically explain what it is you want then we can probably do it. (although whether it is a good idea or not may still be debatable!)
If you want something done right... find a forum and ask an online expert.

Different people learn in different ways. I learn best by doing, and then trying to find easier ways of doing.

My feeling is that you 1st need to understand the fundamentals of excel. Think of it like just another language - there are certain things you just have to grasp before you can use a language. Learn/play with some of the basic functions.
Try your hand at answering some of the questions posted here.
Try to unravel some of the simpler functions and formulas presented (dont even bother with the really complex formulas, they can be daunting to understand)
Ask questions here, and maybe ask what a particular formula that was offered, works? (even if it means starting your own, new thread)
Above all, dont be scared to try things - if they dont work, there is always UNDO - be curiou

Firstly you should start with basic. Have good control over keyboard shortcuts, formulae. Then you should jump to advance features of Excel.

    My approach is like Ford's.

I also keep a large collection of Custom lists so I can quickly generate "junk data" and make "what-if" problems. I just play and have fun.
