I am trying to compare two dates (due date and Submission date) to tell whether the submission is "On-time", "Tardy", or "Advanced". I have this formula. So far I am not successful.

Those don't appear to be dates - they look like just decimal numbers, so your formula is actually doing exactly what it should.

Those still aren't dates. You need to include a year and enter them as proper dates. You can always change the cell format to not display the year if you want, but the actual cell values must be dates.
