    Conditional formatting for entire workbook?

Hello - could anyone advise: excel 2016

1: Can conditional formatting to highlight duplicate cell data - work across the whole workbook instead of just a sheet
The application is going to be used web based with several users - so a macro might be challenging?
2: Is there a similar site to this excellent one for Sharepoint ?

    Thanks

A conditional formatting rule is specific to a range on a single sheet. You can't have CF rules that work across the whole workbook. Do you have a situation where the rules change, or new sheets are added frequently?

Macros could be a solution, depending on what you mean by "web based."

    Welcome to the forum.

We would very much like to help you with your query, however the thread title "excel 2016" does not really convey what your request is about. Tell us what you are trying to do, not how you think it should be done.

Please take a moment to amend your thread title. Make sure that the title properly explains your request. Your title should be explicit and not be generic (this includes function names used without an indication of what you are trying to achieve).

Please see Forum Rule #1 about proper thread titles and adjust accordingly. To edit the thread title, open the original post to edit and then click on Go Advanced (bottom right) to access the area where you can edit your title.

I have updated the title for you since you are relatively new.

Re: Conditional formatting for entire workbook?

    Thanks for the response

Regarding the requirement to prevent duplicated data across the whole workbook, not just a sheet : this would purely be to capture a duplicated 10 digit number in column A on all sheets

Web based - as in users opening the excel sheet as a web application and several writing to it live on line so in the case of using a VBA code concerns about this if a user has a slow connection

    Regards

Are you always adding new sheets, or just updating an existing set of sheets? If the latter you can just do a one-time setup of the CF rules.

When you say, "users opening the excel sheet as a web application" I assume you mean that the workbook is available in a shared location like a OneDrive location or SharePoint site, and the users access it by opening the browser-based version of Excel. You could use a macro, but if users are opening the file in the browser-based version of Excel, then VBA will not run. There is a macro language that works for online Excel but I don't have experience with it.

The same set of existing sheets - what would be the one time set up in CF which would search all sheets ?

    Thanks

It wouldn't search "all sheets" but you would have to write the rule to explicitly identify all sheets. How many sheets do you have?

If it's complicated it's possible to use VBA to set up the rules, or use VBA instead of conditional formatting. Any chance of giving us a sample workbook?

BTW there is not a site for SharePoint affiliated with this site. I have used SharePoint but don't know of a similar forum. I'm sure they must exist.

    Thanks for the reply

Attached is the workbook and it would be conditional formatting to highlight in red if there are duplicate 10 digit numbers - just for column A ( CHI) on sheets 2-9 as per the clip attached - these will not change.

It would really help if duplication across the workbook was highlighted

    Thanks
