View - split, freeze? Which do I use?

    Hi,

First, can someone please clarify for me the difference between Freeze Panes and Split Window?

    Here's my situation:

I want to "lock" both the top row and first column and be able to scroll the rest of the sheet's data.
However, in my current workbook, the first column is apparently not wide enough for all my worksheet tabs to show. This is a problem, especially when I want to insert a new row or column in multiple worksheets, because I can't select multiple tabs at a time.

Is there a way to make the worksheet tabs visible at all times and still "lock" the first column?

    Thanks,

    Nancy

Select cell B2 and select Freeze Panes (first option on the list). This will not affect visibility of the worksheet tabs.

Splitting gives scrollbars on both sides of the divide - freeze panes does not.

    Thanks so much!

For my Daylily Plants workbook, I had to select B3 because B2 is merged with B1, while E1 and E2 are separate and I need to see both rows when scrolling. B3 set the row freeze under Row 2 and the column freeze after Column A, which is exactly what I needed.

Re: View - split, freeze? Which do I use?

Try freezing with either B3 or C2 selected (whichever does what you want), or any cell you choose.

The cell you choose determines the number of rows and columns frozen: choosing D4 would mean that columns A to C would be frozen and rows 1 to 3 likewise.

Play with it a bit - you can't break anything!

    Glad to have helped.
