Vlookup

Can I use Vlookup to find the contents of one cell in an array?
I have column A of partial serial numbers and I'm trying to find the matching serial number in column D. If possible I'd like to plug the match from column D into column B.

This might do it, when i tried not all partials had a match.

=VLOOKUP("*"&A2&"*",$D$2:$D$38,1,FALSE)

results attached.
