Question [CLOSED - NOT SOLVED] Excel External Data Connection - Timeout?

    Hi,

I have a problem.. I have a excel file that refreshes a External Data Connection (SQL Server) on file open.

I set it to Non-Background refresh, and I have a big problem now.. It won't stop querying.. won't allow me to do even cancel it... basically I cant use the file again until that Table it's trying to query comes back online(Yes I do mean the table it's querying comes back)... other tables in this server are working fine.. they are updating or something on this particular table soo it's causing them a problem because excel is constantly on "Waiting for query" and me a problem coz I can't even click on it... I don't want this to happen when I release the file to users.

Is there a way to set a timeout?

Can I add a connection-timeout to this connection string?

Re: Excel External Data Connection - Timeout?

How are you doing this, through the external data tab in Excel or VBA?
    Hope this helps

Sometimes its best to start at the beginning and learn VBA & Excel.

Please dont ask me to do your work for you, I learnt from Reading books, Recording, F1 and Google and like having all of this knowledge in my head for the next time i wish to do it, or wish to tweak it.

Sorry about the late reply... I got and urgent request, which i had to do...

It's a Data Table.. Normal Excel Data Connection.. not a VBA Connection..

If I set it as a Background refresh... it allows a user to cancel it... by clicking on it.. but it's asking too much of a user to do that.
Our Server Department drops this table and the recreates & populates it every week or two weeks.. and it caused them all sorts of problem yesterday, because one of our staffs had the excel file open and it was doing a background refresh.. Server Team had to call us and tell us not to use any excel files for an hour or so.

I think that is all you can do that way, you can set a commandtimeout if you go down the ADO route to populate the data.

How would you go about populating a excel table using ADO?
