Getting error "Can't exit design mode because control 'CommandButton1' can not be created

    hi,

I have a very strange error. This past weekend i took a trip and i took a laptop i dont use often. This laptop has excel on it (version 2007). I made modifications to a macro that i was already working on .......i then transferred the macro back to my main computer and i keep getting this error

"Can't exit design mode because control 'CommanButton1" can not be created"

The commandbutton1 is an activeX button on my "main" worksheet. I press this button to start the macro.

Any ideas? Note: I can not post the macros before and after.........because they contain proprietary information.

Any ideas would greatly be appreciated..........i just dont get it.

It could possibly be due to a Microsoft update. See the link below

Re: Getting error "Can't exit design mode because control 'CommandButton1' can not be crea

I read the link and the symptoms and I just want to make sure my situation fits the same scenario.

    Two computers: CompA and CompB.

Macro developed and running on CompA. Macro transferred to CompB and a "comment" is added to the vba code...no other code changes made. Note: A button is located on a "Main" worksheet in the file which is used to execute the macro.

Macro is also run and output verified on CompB. File renamed on CompB to "Test2" (macro enabled worksheet).

I then transfer the "Test2" file back to CompA. I open the file and try to run it on CompA and i get the error i mentioned before.

Note: I cant download the fixit script or do the manual fix on compA because this is not my computer and i dont have admin privaleges to do anything on this computer.

Note: To try and fix the problem i did the following. Working on CompA. I removed the activeX button from the main sheet and replaced it with a "forms" button. Ran macro and verified results. THen transferred program to compB and then added a "comment" to vba code and resaved macro to a new name "Test3". Then i transferred program BACK to compA......program ran no problem. So the activeX button is somehow causing the problem and once i removed it problem seems to be gone.

So does my problem seem to fit the link description you sent me? If it does then i will ask administrator to download the "script fix" and run it.......does this sound good to you guys? Or should i do someother approach?

I have a very similar problem whose circumstances may further help identify the fault.

I get exactly this fault when I open my workbook on any machine other than the one I've developed it on. Even simply transferring the workbook to another machine that runs Windows 8.1 (64-bit) and Office 10 (32-bit) just like my development machine gives the error 'Can't exit design mode because control CommandButton1 cannot be created'.
My CommandButtons are activeX controls - 'needed' because of the easier naming and the fact that I have very many sheets eac containing such buttons and I need to iterate through the sheets identically.

Re: Getting error "Can't exit design mode because control 'CommandButton1' can not be crea

ok, so i had the problem again. This time a macro that i wrote for my wife quit working. Basically the same issue more or less ( i think) when she opens the excel file she is stuck in "design mode".

So i removed all the .exd files from the computer and tried the macro again. To my surprise one of the macros worked but the other did not........again stuck in design mode.

I was glad one worked but need to get the other working............removing .exd files did not help still stuck in design mode.

    any ideas?

Have you deleted any of the CommandButtons? I found a post that has a solution for this..... http://www.excelforum.com/excel-prog...e-created.html Check out the last post, it has an explanation of what happened and why, and then destructions on how to fix it

Re: Getting error "Can't exit design mode because control 'CommandButton1' can not be crea

times like these i wonder why i even use excel. I spend so much time learning and developing scripts/applications to save time and boom........excel just wont work for some crazy reason........and none of the fixes mentioned here work........ok so i am venting a little but i am very frustrated. sorry.....

anyway, if anyone has any other ideas please let me know.

    thanks.

??I read some where that if you use an object form or active that you should rename it to something uniquely your own and that this problem wont happen.....is this true??

If they are forms controls rather than Activex, you wouldn't get that error.

Have you tried uninstalling the update that was put out on 12/9? Apparently this is supposed to be a "fix" if removing .exd files didn't work. Here is the link...... http://excelmatters.com/2014/12/10/o...ivex-controls/ check the bottom of first post ( Update: 12 Dec 2014) for instructions on how to remove the update. Good Luck

Re: Getting error "Can't exit design mode because control 'CommandButton1' can not be crea

romperstomper, question for you. Based on your comment would it be safe to assume that i should never use the activeX controls. After reading so much on line about this issue this would be my assumption. What about assigning a macro to a shape......would such objects have the same fate as activeX controls or forms controls?

gmr4evr1, thanks for this suggestion. i actually did read this but just totally forgot about it. I will have to see though if my wife is willing to roll back the update. What harm could there be with rolling back the update.......any?

    Hi Welch's,

The only one that is not a picture is Button 24

And it acts like a control?

If you can avoid using Activex controls on worksheets, do so. They aren't always stable and are prone to problems like this. Forms controls and shapes are much more integrated and stable, although they also have fewer properties and only one event ('click' effectively) that you can respond to.
