Here's what mine looks like. As soon as I insert anything onto the sheet it becomes unselectable.

looks like a Forms Control Button, not ActiveX. What happens when you Right-Click it?

A context menu appears and I can do a few things like change the font size, but I cannot move the button.
If you press Esc, the button should remain selected and you can then move/resize it. You can also just Ctrl+click it rather than right-clicking and pressing Esc.

That works. So what is the purpose of the Design Mode button then? Seems to do nothing at all.
It's for ActiveX controls, not Forms ones. Unless you're in design mode, you can't edit ActiveX.
