so i tested my workbook with the monthview control, if i just insert it, then things are ok. but when i link it to a cell, then i get the error. is this a problem with office 365 version?

Rolling around in my brain is the recollection that the date picker control has been long deprecated.
I've seen several forms-based alternatives; here's one from Ron Debruin.

See the link, hope it is of some assistance.
Clicking in column A brings up the DatePicker and a combobox.
The data transfer to a cell may answer your problem.
Happy coding.

i appreciate both of your comments.
however, datepicker is working as expected and allows me to link to a cell which is the functionality that i am looking for.
but my question was really about monthview and the error that is being generated when i link it to a cell. can anyone with a version of 365 confirm this?
See if this works for you
A cleaner version.
For the three date cells, click in cell, MonthView appears, disappears on selection of date.
