    Cool Workbook Save/Reset options ?

I have an Excel 2007 Workbook that has a variety of different reports. I’m trying to find a way that will allow me to reset reports back to original setting after the report has been completed. Sometimes a report may take a couple days to complete, so closing and saving is a must. Any thoughts how I may achieve this.

Hmm. Maybe post an example that illustrates what you actually do? I don't think anyone can visualize what you mean with "report" or "reset report back to original setting" without seeing you data layout and logic.

Include only as much data in your sample as is required to illustrate the issue. Consider zipping the file, too, if it is still big.

    cheers

    A somewhat simplistic solution:
Save a copy of the report when it is at it's "original setting" and then complete the other copy.

    Re: Workbook Save/Reset options ?

I’m sorry, let me try and explain a little better if I may. I have a Workbook that is used to do Home Inspection Reports, using different spreadsheets for different areas of the home. To complete a full Home Inspection Report it requires using anywhere from 10 to 20 spreadsheets/reports. The data that is entered for each report can vary in size and possibly take a couple days to complete. This Workbook will also be used by a variety of different users with different skill levels. So I’m trying to come up way that after a Home Inspection Report has been completed and a new report is to start that I could select, let’s say a command button that will reset all spreadsheets/reports back to original setting.

Create a read-only template workbook that has the virgin settings, and instance a new workbook from it (i.e., the default action when a template is double-clicked) as needed.

Save the workbook with the initial settings as a template (.xlst) file. So the name might be HomeInspectionReport.xltx. Close the file and change it to read-only in Windows Explorer.

When you double-click on the file in Windows Explorer, it will open as HomeInspectionReport1, a new workbook based on the template. The default save format will now be .xlsx. You would have to do something willful to try to save over the original template, but you can't, because it's read-only.

    Re: Workbook Save/Reset options ?

    Hi shg
I thank you and I understand the use of a template and change it to read-only in Windows Exployer. So basically if the report were to take a couple of days and I need to close and save the workbook (xltm) it would only save as a copy of original in a .xlsx or .xlsb format, so that I could return to copied file to finish and complete report.

No. You create the template once with the default formatting, questions, whatever. You will never OPEN the template again unless it needs to change.

Each time you create a new report, you use the template to create a new workbook, which you save with some appropriate name: HomeInspectionReport - Bob's Castle.
