Hi
I first learnt excel whilst working in Russia in 1993, self taught from the supplied MS book. It’s always easier to learn something if you have a need for it. A process engineer used to calculate the ‘Joint Venture’ profits every week, he was busy the whole morning on a calculator with lots of pieces of paper. I thought if we used excel, it would look more professional, so I created a worksheet, initially all he did was enter his calculations and print it off, as the weeks went by, I slowly added calculations to it, eventually making his calculator obsolete, once the spreadsheet was finished, all he had to do was enter 5 or 6 values, the feast were constants, this sped up the process from a morning to a few minutes. I never got thanked, but that didn’t matter, as I enjoyed it. The funny thing is, he never let on to the Russians or anyone else that the report was ready within 1/2 hr of him arriving at work, as he still waited till 1pm to release it to the Russians and London head office.

I also created a spreadsheet for refinery tank inventory, I used VBA for this, it was updated through the week, with water draw off, transfers in and out of tanks. Specific gravity changes etc etc.it evolved from something simple, to something the ‘team’ couldn’t manage without.

So that’s how I learnt excel, always amazes me how powerful it is, just created a spreadsheet for my gas and electricity use, with tariffs standing charges etc. Doesn’t fully use the awesome power of excel, but much better than a calculator and paper 🤣😂🤣
