I'm sure I'm not the only one here who reads Dilbert, so you may have already seen this - but it seems particularly apposite for this forum:

I recently started a new job so am a bit busy and may not reply quickly. Sorry - it's not personal - I will reply eventually.
If your problem is solved, please go to 'Thread Tools' above your first post and 'Mark this Thread as Solved'.
If you use commas as your decimal separator (1,23 instead of 1.23) then please replace commas with semi-colons in your formulae.
You don't need to give me rep if I helped, but a thank-you is nice.
This can be explained by Peter's principle in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role.
Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence."

If they are exceptionally incompetent, they are promoted even more: the old "getting kicked upstairs."
Screw up and move up.
We subscribe to the Ancient Egyptian School of Management: Push the dead weight to the top of the pyramid.
Taking this even further 'off-topic' (but I'm the OP, so I'm allowed ), I remember being told the mathematical proof for why the boss always earns more than the employees:
- Being the boss means you have more power;
- Physics tells us that Power = Work done x Time;
- Everyone knows that Time = Money;
- So Power = Work done x Money;
- So Money = Power / Work done;
- So as the amount of work done goes down, the amount of money goes up...
Edit: see post below for correct version - this was the 'posting while half asleep' version (I could pretend it was the 'check if you're paying attention' version, but I'd be lying )

Note to self: don't post when you've been awake for 20 hours...
The correct version of the Power equation as it applies to bosses, you and knowledge is:
Power = Work / Time
Time = Money
Knowledge = Power
Knowledge = Work / Money
=> the more you know, the more work you do and the less money you make
Money = Work / Knowledge
=> as Knowledge approaches 0, money approaches infinity
==> The less you know, the more you make...
Work = Money x Knowledge
=> if you're stupid and rich, you do no work...
Edit: I've added a note to my post above, in a (probably futile) attempt to stop people laughing at my physics failure...
