Click the 'Thread tools' button, then click 'Subscribe to this thread' for the threads where you want to be notified.

In Settings > General settings > Default Thread Subscription Mode: > Instantly using email
Email notification failures are, sadly, rather common. Sometimes it seems to be a temporary sitewide problem, sometimes it's a settings issue, and other times it is specific to an email address. Personally, I can get notifications sent to my personal email address, but they stopped functioning with my work email address a year or so ago. I would advise following all of the advice you receive here, but don't be too discouraged or surprised if you still have issues.
