Is this a record?

Idly browsing the forum just now I spotted this thread

https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...ruit-case.html

A thread with 6 posts, 4 of which are mere Admin type posts and unrelated to the actual question, one is the OP and the other JeteMc's substantial reply. Yet this has resulted in 1431 views.

Is this Views:Post ratio a record?

Oops, almost spoke too soon. This one is marginally bigger 3169:13 = 243.1
https://www.excelforum.com/excel-gen...rithmetic.html

...what is going on with these. This last one is not exactly a run of the mill Q.

Re: Is this a record?

I think there's something going on with the view count. There's one on the front page with 7 replies and over 10,000 views that was just necro'd after 4 months.

Re: Is this a record?

I know exactly what it is (I think ...).

Any thread with something in its title that comes up a lot in Google searches (e.g. Fruit Case - seems to be a game of some sort) or in the body text (e.g. Excel 2016) will get a lot of hits and therefore views. These won't be forum members, but 'guests' who've chanced upon the thread when looking for something else.

Ahhh, that makes sense. I hadn't considered visitors from outside the forum counting as views.

That might explain the first one but I doubt that Multiplicative Inverse under modulo arithmetict would be top of the agenda for the man on the Clapham Omnibus - or even his younger sister on the Manchester Metro.

Hi Kyle,

Just as a matter of interest where / how do you find the two numbers?
I saw the original on the 'What's New' page but of course they drift away as new ones arrive.

I think it's just a matter of going to the particular sub-forum. I saw one post in there with 210k views and 3 posts, so 70k views per post

Re: Is this a record?

Yeah that's a more logical way of doing it. The one's I've posted are mine that I've noticed and I can see them in threads started by me.

It's also pretty easy to game if one were so inclined, it'd be easy top put a couple of lines of code together that would call the thread thousands of times - though I don't know why anyone would bother

Re: Is this a record?

Sorting Excel:General by Views (high to low), I think I've found the winner:

In Excel how can I filter multiple columns SIMULTANEOUSLY?

321,205 views : 6 replies
So a ratio of 53,534 : 1 on that one.

Like Ali said, it's something that people would be Googling a lot, so it would get a lot of lurkers finding it from search engines; and it's an old thread, so it's had better than a decade to rack up hits. (And it's locked, so specific to this discussion of the views:posts ratio, it can only do better).

Kinda surprised, looking at sort-by-views, that there aren't any timesheet questions. Of the questions I've done and monitored, I feel like timesheet questions also accumulate hits pretty quick, as people search around looking for the super-special timesheet that will do exactly what they want. I've gotten to kind of resent timesheet questions though, because they're usually a lot of work that isn't terribly novel.

I think that would separately win as "most vain reason to launch a DOS attack"

Recently a bot (+http://www.semrush.com/bot.html) increased the number of visitors of my website considerably.
After I blocked that bot the visitor number 'rose' to normal.

Re: Is this a record?

Like snb, I also think that (spam)bots are part of the problem..
that a topic op 13 years old scores high views is no wonder.. there you see the effect of popular goolge keywords and a populair website leads to lot of hits / views but no repsonses.

So there is more than one truth to how a lot of views come about. So you have to combine the age of a topic and the number of reactions.

I regularly see topics in the Excelforum that is like is 2 hours old, and has 500 views while other topics only have 10-20 in 1 hours there is something "fishy" this is not due to google search.
(it also takes some time for google search to pickup new topics)

most spamming is done by bots but a lot of bots are not build well so sometimes they get stuck, most of the bots get stopped by spamprevention messures here floodccontrol often stops the bots after 5 posts with the well known links in title spam.. Most bots are build to keep going until they are stopped, and only timeout after a few minutes if there attemps to post fail.

my theory is that
When floodcontrol steps in they keep trying to create topics and I think that can result in 1 topic gets hit many times because there attemps to create fail and they then try to post a reply to the (at that time) most recent topic, but floodcontrol is not only for new topics but for all messages per minute/hour or day on excelforum.
A bot can easily try 100 or 200 times per minute to post a reply before it times out where each attempt to reply is also counted as a view (you have to click the topic to get to the reply box)

So for the amateur investigators or others intreged by this.. keep an Eye on the whatsnew page.
I have seen several times 5 spamposts and then also a new topic with a lot more views then others. I will keep an eye out over the next days and make a screenshot of the effect if I can..

but it will need investigation by admins or tech support to see what causes this and if it is spam related or actual visits..

I am sure admins will do there best. Concerning the TS I have my doubts...

Honestly, I think the admins have got better things to waste their time on and the tech team won't be remotely interested.

Re: Is this a record?

I did not expect them to actualy do that.. It was only to indicate that if we would want to know for sure it would be to look at those statistics..but that got "lost in translation" apperently..

Only analysing the stats can give a good answer, other then that it is a lot of guessing and most guesses will have some truth to it which makes it a nice watercooler topic to do some guessing en chatting about

Re: Is this a record?

I had noticed this same trend, a while back (maybe a month or more?)

As was already mentioned, we (I) have a hard enough time getting the TT to respond to more important?? concerns, so I have not even bothered to raise this.

On a side note, and to the TT's credit, i DID get some momentum from this on a few things, after some nasty comments and threats to them, as well as cataloging (along with a time-line) a list of outstanding matters. Some may not seem so pressing, but they have all been outstanding for a considerable length of time, for example...

1. Newbie post count dropped from 10 to 5 before links can be included.
2. no urls allowed in titles (noticed a drop in spammers lately?)
3. still pushing to simplify the spammer banning process
4. had some CS refunds made.
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools
3. Click on the star if you think someone helped you

No - how late is lately? I'm still seeing URLs in titles (as of today):
