Farewell to a pillar of our forum

It is with great sadness that I inform the forum that one of our moderators, Richard Buttrey, passed away earlier today after battling Covid-19. He will be sorely missed. Richard had been part of this forum for 14 years and was an outstanding contributor.

Richard contacted the mod team just a few hours before his passing to say that he had enjoyed his 14 years here and to wish the forum good luck for the future.

    RIP Richard

I feared the worst when I clicked on the link, very sad news. It doesn't make much sense, but I always appreciated Richard's support a little bit more with him being in the same area as me.

If anyone is in touch with the family, please let them know what a loss to the forum and wider Excel community his passing is.

    Re: Richard Buttrey

I had no idea that Richard was ill, so this came as a great shock to me, particularly as he lives/lived in the same town. He was a great contributor to the forum for many years, and his expertise will be sorely missed.

We rarely get to hear about members passing on - perhaps the Forum Admins could designate his Status as "Forum Moderator - RIP", as we did for Marcol a few years ago, as his contributions will still be available on the forum.

My sincere condolences to his family.

    Pete

No, neither did we until he posted to our mod group from hospital that he was dying of Covid late on Wednesday evening. It says something about the man that he was thinking of us even in his final hours. I agree about the profile tweak - good idea. Yes, a huge shock.

This is such a shock. Very sad news.

Richard lived not far from me and we had exchanged PMs and emails about, amongst other things, our experiences of parking fines at John Lennon Airport. I had often thought we should try to get together for a beer or two, but never got round to it. Lost for words.

    RIP Richard Buttrey

Re: Farewell to a pillar of our forum

It was a shock to read his last Whatsapp to the Mod group. We never met, but we exchanged a few PMs about the divisive B-word: we were polar opposites on the subject!! But we differed gracefully. He was a fair Moderator with great Excel skills who went the extra mile to help others.

    He'll be hugely missed.

Richard, may your God go with you.

Death of Redwood Bank campaigner Richard Buttrey
BY GARY SKENTELBERY ON 10TH OCTOBER 2022 5:08 PM

RETIRED accountant Richard Buttrey, who was instrumental in challenging Warrington Council?s investment in Redwood Bank, has sadly passed away in hospital last Thursday (6th October).

Richard from Stockton Heath was a leading light in shining a spotlight on Warrington Borough Council?s investment in Redwood Bank, drawing attention to the decision-making process and the financial consequences.

His tireless efforts included letters of objection to the Council?s auditors, lobbying of interested parties and a number of letters to local media outlets.

He also ensured that the result of an earlier objection to the auditors, which had been treated as confidential, came into the public domain.

In paying tribute, fellow campaigners said: ?Richard was too modest to claim any personal credit, but it is a matter of fact that the Council?s accounts for the last 5 years remain unsigned and the Council agreed earlier this year to reduce the value of the Redwood investment in their accounts from ?32 million to about half that figure.?

Richard worked with four fellow campaigners and emailed the group the day before he died asking them to continue the campaign and asking to make sure they got a satisfactory answer.

In response, the campaigners have said ?We?re all heartbroken by the news. Richard was a lovely person and incredibly tenacious. The best way we can honour him will be to press the Council to resolve outstanding issues with the investment to the betterment of Warrington?s council tax-payers?.
