    Thanks Romperstomper

I haven't been on the forum much this week (work's very busy), but I wanted to pop in to thank RS for recommending the Professional Excel Developer's guide. My copy arrived on Wednesday and though I haven't had much time to spend on it yet (I'm about 60-odd pages in) it's just absolutely brilliant.

Until I joined this forum I thought I knew pretty much everything there was to know about VBA, a couple of months in I was realising that I still had a bit to learn, now I've got this book and I realise I haven't even scratched the surface.

    Oh yes.

Until last night I didn't realise you could declare a variant and then set it to a range and have Excel magically turn it into a two dimensional array of values. How useful is that!

I'm coding this morning (for work) and my code looks a *lot* different to anything I've previously done...

Yep. The thing that sometimes catches people is that it's always a 2D array (assuming more than one cell!), even if you only refer to one row or column.

    Nice looking code, too.

I'm sure I should use arrays a lot more than I do in my code. Not something I've ever really got into the habit of doing.

I also know I should buy PED and actually spend some time learning from it rather than just adding it to my growing pile of Excel books that sit on my desk gathering dust.

    Re: Thanks Romperstomper

It's actually my first Excel book (not counting the manuals that used to come packed with MS Office), I don't even have many technical books at all. Looking at my bookshelves the other night showed such classics as Dummy's guide to XML (mainly unread, because my desire to understand XML proved to be lower than my willingness to tolerate the word 'Wellformedness') and The complete developer's guide to Windows '95, although I was surprised to find my battered copy of The Acorn Electron user's guide and a well-thumbed BBC Micro Advanced User's Guide were still lurking in there.

On the other hand, if anybody's got any questions about midwifery* there are dozens of books on that subject littering my bookshelves**

I'm pretty sure I've still got manuals for the BBC Micro and Commodore 64 lying around somewhere. I think they both came with fold out circuit diagrams which I obviously found incredibly useful.

The BBC advanced user's guide does, indeed, have a fold out circuit diagram included, but it wasn't in the standard guide.

Cool, I may just pick one up after reading the reviews online. Do you get a commission?
